MPC Walks 2020

The following MPC walks took place in 2020. It was the year of the Covid-19 pandemic, so many walks were cancelled. There were two lockdowns, for March to June, and then November and December. Walks cancelled by the pandemic are retained for information but are not assigned walk numbers.

Five walks to get us going again,
before resuming the planned walks.

5392 11 Jul Ashton & Rochdale Canals
(replaced Hathersage Medley 16 m, strenuous)
SE 8 Members joined the first walk.

11:30. We met at the corner of Ducie Street and Piccadilly Station approach. The walk took us through Piccadilly village on the Ashton Canal to the Etihad football stadium, from here we walk down Hulme hall Lane to pick up the Rochdale Canal. On both canals can be seen buildings from Manchester's industrial heritage alongside the redevelopment of Ancoats and the Northern Quarter. 4 m.

5393 18 Jul Darwen Moor
(replaced Cat & Fiddle 17 m, strenuous)
SE 11:00. Royal Arms Pub Ryal Fold Tockholes Road BB3 0PA

The walk is a seven signpost walk over Darwen Moor and through Roddlesworth woods and is taken from the PNFS Spring 2020 magazine. The additional four miles takes in two reservoirs before returning to the pub. There is a natural break after 5.5 miles should some members wish to have a shorter walk. 5.5 m.

5394 25 Jul Shatton Mast Brough
(replaced Bamford 14 m, strenuous)
E 11:00. Travellers Rest, Brough Lane, Hope Valley, High Peak S33 9HG.

After Travellers Rest, picks up the river at Shatton village, which we follow to the steppingstones. From here we walk up to Offerton Hall and then on to the mast. Coming down we walk through Overdale nature reserve, down from Bradwell Edge to Bradwell village and back to the Travellers Rest. 9 m.

August 2020
5395 1 Aug Hayfield

E 11:00. Royal Hotel Hayfield, then Phoside farm, Peep O' Day, quarries, Over Hill Road (turn right) bridleway to the TV mast, Moorland Road, Sett Valley trail, Heyfield. 9 m.
5396 8 Aug Teggs Nose Country Park
(replaced Cutgate)
N 11.00. Teggs Nose carpark (charge £3.00 all day)

We follow the Gritstone trail to Green Barn, on to Leathers Smithy pub, walk down the tracks at Ridgegate Reservoir and on to the Ranger Hut. From here we take the Red marker route through the forest, which we follow all the way back to the carpark. This is a strenuous walk and will be taken at a moderate pace with morning, lunch and afternoon stops. As the route is well marked and easy to follow, members who are fitter and can manage a faster pace can proceed at their own pace back to the carpark. 9 m.

5404 3 Oct Saddleworth (instead of Lakes Festival, owing to Covid-19 lockdown) NE This day was the record wettest day in the UK, raining from south of England to the north of Scotland, with average rainfall of 31 mm.

The Saddleworth walk was 8 m: Old Bell Inn, Platt Lane, Lark Hill Road and Harrop Edge, Bleak Hey Nook, Millstone Edge, Diggle, Boat Lane, Brun Clough, Dobcross, Delph because weather was terrible. Would have been Broadhead Noddle, Heights Church, Delph.

However, one member actually walked in the Lakes, and reported "All of you missed nothing but the rain in the Lakes two and a half weeks ago. Saturday was just miserable, not overly cold, nor windy, but just continuous light rain during all daylight hours ~ and the cloudbase was low, lower than the top of Catbells."
